		<description><![CDATA[&#160; Sydney Scarlata of The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools is the 2012 Illinois Scholastic Journalist of the Year.  Scarlata, editor of the U-High Midway, was selected from a field of talented journalists who submitted outstanding portfolios.  Scarlata&#8217;s  adviser is Wayne Brasler.  The runner up is Daniel Brount, of Wheeling High School where he is editor of The Spokesman.   He has been advised by John Uhrik and Karen Barrett, MJE.  Receiving honorable mention was Madeline Conway, editor of The Prospector at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect.  Her adviser is Jason Block, CJE. All three will be honored at the IJEA&#8217;s annual awards luncheon.  The 2012 event will be Saturday, June 2 at the Executive Mansion in Springfield.  It is underwritten by the Illinois Press Foundation.]]></description>

<p>At a ceremony Saturday, June 4, 2011, at the Executive Mansion in Springfield, the IJEA honored the state&#8217;s top high school journalists. At this annual event, co-sponsored by the Illinois Press Foundation, students, their advisers and their families celebrated excellence in scholastic journalism. The keynote speaker was Dave Bakke, a columnist at the State Journal-Register.<br />

Former IJEA Executive Secretary James Tidwell, introduced Cantrell at a ceremony June 4 at the Executive Mansion in Springfield, and cited her for her commitment to a free student press at Hersey. She was nominated by adviser Janet Levin.</p>
